GrApple Firefox Theme: Now 30% more Safari!
Anybody that uses Firefox on OS X knows and loves Aronnax’s GrApple themes. They make the interface blend into the OS in an almost uncanny way. His themes mimic that of Safari’s in almost every way… almost. There have always been a couple things that bugged me about his themes. Very, very tiny, minuscule things, but they annoyed me nonetheless. Not to say I don’t appreciate all the work that Aronnax has put into his themes, I’ve just gone one extra step to customize them for myself.
In FF2, back on 10.4, I went so far as to remove one pixel of shadows on every single toolbar button just because I liked it better that way and I felt it fit in with the rest of the OS better. I also changed the ‘New Tab’ button to mock Safari’s ‘Add Bookmark.’ I believe he originally had it this way, but changed it with an update to the theme. I liked it better the old way, so I changed it back.
Well for his latest theme on FF3 (for 10.5), I decided I wanted to change a couple more things. All I did was switch some items to make it look like Safari just that much more.

I reverted the New Tab button again and changed the Home button as well. I also switched the bookmark toolbar button, which was originally a star icon, to the open book icon that Safari uses.
Apologies to Arronax, and thanks for such a great theme.
No commentsAnother Firefox 3 Interface Oversight on OS X
I know there are many people out there complaining about how Firefox failed at trying to emulate the OS X interface with the latest version of the browser, and I agree… for the most part. I mean, from a designers’ stand-point, even the slightest errors are considered a failure, especially considering how huge Firefox is and how long they’ve been working on it. I mean, why release a product if it’s not absolutely perfect, right? But then there are others who don’t really care about the minute, pixel-by-pixel slip-ups as long as the the thing works, and it works well (which it does, in my opinion).
It’s a hard game to play, I think. Fixing those tiny interface flubs is probably something the designers definitely wanted to do, but it would have probably been more work than it was worth to try to get Firefox looking exactly like a native OS X app, especially considering it’s not Cocoa-based (Firefox is a cross-platform app after all). I think, in the future, the browser will definitely fit into the OS more, on an interface basis (remember Firefox 2?), but for now we’ll have to deal with these small annoyances and just keep in mind that it’s a step in the right direction.
The point of this short article was to point out another mistake in the Firefox 3 interface for the Mac. I noticed this while scrolling through a long article in both Safari and Firefox. I knew something didn’t look right.

The window resize handle covers the down arrow when the status bar is hidden in Firefox, making it impossible to click the arrow. Eh, it’s not terrible or anything, but still… some people stress the small things. Was it like this in Firefox 2? I can’t even remember now.
Update: Seems like this was already covered (among several other things) in this post.
No commentsClassic AdBlock updated to work with Firefox 3
I was pretty disappointed when I downloaded Firefox 3 and learned that my favorite adblocking extension was no longer compatible with it. I’m talking about AdBlock of course. I figured it was no big deal and just went ahead and downloaded AdBlock Plus. I thought, with it being ‘plus’ and all, that it’d have more features or something. I don’t know if I missed something, but I couldn’t even import a list of filters for it like I could with AdBlock. This thing had way less features than I was used to. I never used Filterset.G or anything like that. I always liked to set my own filters.
I did some mucking around in the install.rdf file for AdBlock and went ahead and changed the maxVersion number to 3.0. In short, my favorite add-on is now compatible with my favorite browser, once again. I realize this could just as easily be accomplished with Nightly Tester Tools, but I’d rather not have to download another add-on just to make a different add-on work. I already have too many as it is.
If anybody else would like to download this unofficial, updated version of AdBlock, you can do so right here. Right-click and save the .xpi file to your desktop and just open it up with Firefox (File > Open File). But remember, this is in no way an official release, and is therefore unsupported by the original creators of the add-on. I can’t be responsible for any damages it may cause. Use at your own risk. (Though I’m rather certain it won’t cause any damage… but still, take caution).
For a list of filters, you can visit the IGN Boards page and download it there.

No commentsNot Google too…
Just the other day I was thinking to myself, “when will Apple finally drop the “i-” prefix. It seems to be a little overused these days.” Google comes along and pulls a fast one on us.
Although Google is known for testing out certain things for just a few days before they seemingly disappear again. A few months ago they brought some changes to the Image Results page, but those were gone within the week. Who knows if this little addition will last, but I sure hope not.
I guess that’s what the i means in google.com/ig
No commentsWonderful Tribute to Calculator Gaming
Watching this video almost brought tears to my eyes as I saw all my glory days of high school flash before me. It’s a short video but it shows all the progress that has been brought to TI-calculator based gaming over the years. It features classics from the likes of Super Mario 83 and Bubble Bobble to great originals such as Desolate by Patrick Prendergast and Asprin by Jean-Francois Geyelin…. there’s even a Counter-Strike port to the TI!
So if you’re a nerd like me (or like I was) make sure to watch this video and see how many games you recognize.
No commentsThe most best Batman movie ever made
This is possibly the coolest fan made Batman flick ever made. Heck, it’s probably the best Batman flick of any that were ever made. It’s just too bad it didn’t have any of the classic “Pow! Bam! Biff!” but it does have the classic Batman theme at the end, which I found funny. And make sure to watch it to the very last second.
No commentsCreated a logo
One of my friends asked me to create a logo for her new business “Development Consulting Group, LLC”. God knows what she does, but I created a simple little logo for her.
You might think it looks a little quasi-AT&T, but hey… I think it looks pretty good for a quick little job. So if you ever do business with her, keep in mind that I created the logo.
No commentsGoogle Themes
I just noticed this cool new feature this morning. You can now select a theme for your Google home page! There’s a selection of about five themes you can choose from.
That’s the beach theme right there. Another neat-o feature is that the themes change with the time of day. It’s like Google is taking over my life, and it doesn’t even bother me!
Target….Serious Business
You steal from target, you go to jail… FOR LIFE! Just watch this video. This is as serious as it gets.
